Jacobs Tae Kwon Do
Head Instructor - Michael Jacobs
From the very moment that Michael was introduced to Tae Kwon Do he knew that it would be a part of his life forever. Mike Jacobs began his Tae Kwon Do journey at the age of 13 under the instruction of Reg Michelin in Happy Valley Goose Bay, Newfoundland and Labrador.
In 1993 Michael began training under the instruction of Reg Cantwell in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador. Mr. Cantwell’s school taught the Chong Lee style of Tae Kwon Do. This style appealed to Michael because it complemented both his moral and social values. Chong Lee Tae Kwon Do is a family, its underlying value being respect. Michael came from a small town with few support networks in St. John’s. Mr. Cantwell’s dojang offered a home away from home.
If you asked Michael “what do you consider the most important aspects of Tae Kwon Do? He would tell you “Tae Kwon Do nourishes us as human beings, creating and enhancing within us an indomitable spirit. Tae Kwon Do has developed and strengthens much of who I am. It has seen me through many trials.”
Through out Michael’s university years, during the times when he was home in Goose Bay he had the privilege of training under Tae Kwon Do instructor, Paul Boland. He also took advantage of opportunities to train in other martial arts such as Judo and Kenpo. This increased his martial arts knowledge; however Chong Lee Tae Kwon Do always remained in the forefront.
Michael convocased from university in 1999. It was not until 2001 that he finally found his calling as a group home councilor. Working with youth is something that comes natural for Michael. He has an uncanny ability to connect with youth, no matter their background/personality.
After Michael was promoted to first Dan he began assisting a fellow martial artist, Tom Dunne, with a new mixed martial arts school that Tom had established in Clarenville, Newfoundland and Labrador.
In 2004, Michael’s instructor Reg Cantwell was injured in a car accident which prevented him from teaching. Due to this unfortunate situation, Michael and some of Reg’s other students began to instruct for Mr. Cantwell. Master Cantwell soon was forced to retire from Tae Kwon Do instruction as a result of his chronic injuries. As such, Michael was taken on by a new Master, Jens Hosel.
It was just a natural evolution that Michael as a youth councilor would embrace teaching Tae Kwon Do to youth. “My belief in God and the knowledge I have gained from Chong Lee Tae Kwon Do has helped me in so many ways; I just want to pass on what I have learned.”
It was in November of 2004 when an opportunity presented itself as a full time martial arts instructor position was advertised in the Evening telegram. The position was to see that the successful candidate would live and set up a martial arts school in Natuashish, Newfoundland and Labrador, working for the Mushuau Innu. This was very appealing to Michael, who was born and raised in Newfoundland and Labrador.
After several interviews Michael was chosen as the successful candidate. He opened Jacobs Tae Kwon Do, a Chong Lee School on January 16 th 2005 in Natuashish, Newfoundland and Labrador. “The response and support from the community was tremendous, they helped create a great Tae Kwon Do club.”
Michael returned from Natuashish in June of 2006. He open his second chapter of Jacobs Tae Kwon Do in September of 2006.
